The Lord Jesus had some pretty radical ideas about how life is supposed to work. One of his more radical statements is found in a conversation with the Pharisees.
“And He said to them… ‘For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.'” (Luke 16:15 NKJV)
While this statement is aimed at the Pharisee’s love affair with money, it’s truth extends far beyond a person’s desire for wealth. In fact, application could be made to just about every aspect of a person’s life. Simply put, Jesus says that if the world supports it, God hates it. The word “abomination” evokes the idea of utter disgust and contempt.
Take the growing support of divorce, abortion, and same-sex marriage as examples. What the world promotes as “freedom of choice,” God considers sin.
Even in the Christian world, we see pride, self-sufficiency, and gluttony (along with a growing acceptance of extra-marital sex) as “not that bad.” God see these as abominable.
Is there anything you (or your culture) holds in high esteem that God hates? What will you do to change your position towards it?
